ARTIST OF THE DAY // SPHYNX
HOT VOX showcase some of the freshest emerging artists breaking through onto the scene, but in an industry saturated with new music, how can you cut through the noise? To separate the best from the rest, we have cherry picked one of our favourite new acts and are pleased to have them as our Artist Of The Day.
Today's Featured Artist Of The Day is Sphynx.
Sphynx is a long-time fixture of the Austin music scene; they were even honored in 2014 with a City Hall proclamation declaring February 13 ‘Sphynx Day’ in Austin. Now, after cutting their teeth in dive bars and house parties across the US, Austin’s homegrown secret is out.
The band had a breakout year in 2017, releasing 2 EPs and playing packed venues and festivals across the US opening for top acts like Questlove and Walk The Moon. That momentum continued into 2018 with the February release of ‘Patterns,’ a synthwave groove illustrating the band’s penchant for timeless hooks with a modern edge. The single was streamed over 43,000 times in its first week and has received radio play across the US, UK, and Mexico.
Sphynx made their maiden voyage to the UK in early March where they logged 6 headline performances for enthusiastic crowds; selling out the famed Troubadour in London, garnering praise from the prominent UK magazine The Music Site and collaborating with UK songwriters and DJs. The band flew back to Austin in time for 6 more shows during SXSW 2018, receiving a warm welcome at their annual ‘Sphynx & Friends Day Party’ and headlining for a capacity crowd at the popular MidCoast Takeover showcase.
With a string of videos and singles set for release and 2018, a placement on the series finale of CMT’s ‘Nashville,’ and appearances at festivals across the US and Europe, Sphynx’s buzz is just beginning. Years spent sleeping in vans and touring relentlessly have shaped a band with a fresh take on pop music and a stadium-worthy live show.
