Who are Concrete Natives? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together etc
We are a British funk group that got together in the hazy summer of ’16. We’re all based in and around London started playing together after posting an ad online. We met up for some drinks, jammed a couple of covers and haven’t looked back.

Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?
We had a lot of names in the mix. A LOT. Concrete Natives is the name we felt best represented our sound as we move between rock, soul and blues on top of that solid funk foundation.

If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?
Ed. Kiran. Sam. Erin. Tom. – Just kidding.

Who are your biggest influences musically?
Not gonna lie there’s a lot of vintage flavour going on in our sound: Funkadelic, The Doors, Santana, Chic, James Brown – but the contemporary players too like Robert Glasper, Vulfpeck, The Alabama Shakes, Nathaniel Rateliff etc.

What’s the band's biggest claim to fame so far?
Every show we’ve played so far, we’ve reached someone and made a solid connection. Especially when we aren’t necessarily playing their kind of music.

What’s your songwriting process?
It’s very much a collaborative process, all of our tracks have begun as one element and we’ve figured the rest out together. It seems to be working so far…

If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
Vulfpeck, Janelle Monae, Vintage Trouble, Thundercat or The Rolling Stones – Gotta have dreams right?

If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
James Brown, Carlos Santana, Lianne La Havas, Stephen Bruner, Kamasi Washington, Ray Manzarek and John Bonham

How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
It’s electric. The right kind of loose, you’ll dance, scream and leave with a huge smile on your face, of course, you won’t want to leave…

Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
Mostly just drinking. But a post gig slice of pizza is the one.

What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva? This question is for all band members.
Sam’s got a sweet tooth, so probably a bit of chocolate. Erin wants a remote controlled beer cooler - I would like a three piece suit flown in by two reticulated swans or an inordinate amount of watermelon, please and thank you

If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?
Toto – Africa or Live it Up by Mental As Anything from that scene in Crocodile Dundee 2. Quintessential 80s. I am not ashamed!

Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band
I really really REALLY don’t like the sound of my own voice. They seem to like it which is lovely.

If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?
You can stream three of our tracks on Soundcloud at but we’re also self-releasing our debut single “Old School” soon and that will be on all of the finest digital channels.

Finally, What does the future hold for the band?
Well we’d like to play more shows, a festival or two, support some bigger acts and see what happens…
