HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH ELEVNS
Who are ELEVNS? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together etc
We are an electronic music duo, Gramm and Aurelian, and we are based in London. We are originally from Switzerland and we’ve been living in London for a few years now. We met in our hometown Lausanne in Switzerland as we had some mutual friends and were both making music but in different projects back in the days. We always wanted to be artists so after we moved to London, we started sketching our project that finally became ELEVNS. We’ve been playing together for a few years for different projects meeting a lot of great musicians but for ELEVNS it has been about 2 years.
Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?
We really struggled finding a name for the project because we wanted something cool and unique. Most of the first name ideas we had already existed. At some point we thought about our birth dates and we Gramm was born 11/02 and Aurelian 20/11 so we kept the number eleven as it looked cool visually, then we removed one letter and added an s and so ELEVNS was born haha
If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?
Funny, energetic, ambitious, hard working and international
Who are your biggest influences musically?
We both come from different musical background but we are really big fans of Snakehips, ALLTTA, Kaytranada, Brasstracks, Pomo, Anderson .Paak just to name a few.
What’s the band's biggest claim to fame so far?
This is a hard question haha. Probably the fact that our first single “Let Me In” was added to Spotify New Music Friday, New Music Friday UK and in a lot of other countries such as Denmark and Polska for example. That was an amazing surprise for us and it helped us gain more fans.
What’s your songwriting process?
It depends really, sometimes we get into a session with some singers and songwriters and start a new song from scratch. Usually we start with a few beats ideas and when writers get inspired then we all start writing and arranging the song. But also sometimes, like the case of “Let Me In”, we made the beat first as demo during summer and thought it would be nice to have vocals on it. So we decided to send it to our friend Syon who sent us a rough idea literally 20 min after we sent him the track. Everything was made remotely for this song as Syon recorded his vocals in his home studio and sent them to us.
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
There are sooo many! But if we had to choose we’d say french electronic band Alltta because their music is full of energy and good for partying!
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
Our manager, musicians, singers and filmmakers are the best really so we already have our dream team band haha.
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
We have different setups actually. We have a setup where it is only the two of us as sort Dj set, a second setup where it’s us with maybe 1 or 2 singers and then we have a full band version with a drummer, a bass player and singers that also act as backing vocalists. We mix electronic instruments such as SPD-SX drum pads, midi controllers like Ableton Push and midi keyboards with organic instruments like electric guitar and a drum rack with snare and cymbals.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
Usually we all hang out backstage and everybody sings, this is our haka and it helps us psychologically before going on stage and it also helps reducing the pre-gig stress.
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
A personal cook and a barista that would make Flat whites hahaha
Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band
Aurelian has a degree in hardware and software engineering and Gramm is a specialist of the recorder
If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?
The best places are our Instagram @elevnsofficial , Spotify and on our website http://www.elevnsofficial.com
Finally, What does the future hold for the band?
We are doing our EP launch party at Camden Assembly on 23rd of March obviously but we are also trying to plan some tours around Europe and the USA as well. We have a line up of EPs to be released throughout the year so it should be a good year:) More collaborations and more to come gigs too.
