HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH EMILY MAGPIE
Who is ...? Where are you from, how long have you been playing music etc
Emily Magpie, Bristol artist via London... Originally from Cornwall. I started off singing in a jazz band as a teenager before learning to produce and play ukulele in my 20's.
If you had to describe your sound using just five words, what would they be?
Dreamy, chilled, cosmic-y, dutty bass-y
Who are your biggest influences musically?
Maggie Rogers, Sylvan Esso, FKA Twigs
When you were younger, what was the first album that blew you away and you remember putting on repeat non-stop?
My brother got me into Modest Mouse.. there were other bands before that which I loved, but I remember just hearing the album coming from his room, and thinking 'WHO is this?!' I instantly loved it.
As a performer, what’s your biggest claim to fame so far?
I supported This is the Kit at the start of this year, which was big for me as I adore their music. Tried not to be too fan-girly...
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
Well, This is the Kit if they'll have me haha! Or Sylvan Esso, Elder Island.
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
Ooooooh good question. I'd get FKJ on keys/synth... he's amazing. James Blake could teach me a thing or two about beats/producing.. Maybe some of Daughter's bandmates too, they're awesome.
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
There's looping, singing, playing, floaty songs then my weird in-between songs chat... I need to get cooler.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
A beer after I've played. Never like to drink before so love a well earnt beer after my set.
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
Peanut butter bananas honey and icecream. I just want to eat that everyday anyway. Also one day I want a personal masseuse. I'd embrace being a diva if I got that.
If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?
RIHANNA. And any 90's R&B, but I try not to feel guilty about it, it's great.
Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about you?
I used to be an actor...
If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?
I'm on Instagram & Twitter too.
Finally, What does the future hold for you as an artist?
Moooooore music... Haha... Working on the next EP as we speak 'Be Your Own Light', to be released in Autumn. I'm forever learning and growing as an artist and I'm excited about this one- going a bit more minimal/lofi but also with more live band sounds. Got some exciting support slots and festivals booked in, and want to try and tour as much as humanly possible... UK, Europe, the world. You know, pretty low-key plans..
