HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH GARDENBACK
Who are ...? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together etc
We’re Gardenback from Oldham, north east Manchester. We’ve known each other since we’re old enough to ride bikes. We’ve been playing together since early teens, but we’ve been playing as Gardenback since 2016.
Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?
Ellis was flipping through a David Lynch book and found the word ‘Gardenback’, it was a script he abandoned whilst writing Eraserhead. We’re all fans of his work, so thought intellectual theft was fine as a homage.
If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?
Music for the anxious loner.
Who are your biggest influences musically?
Pixies, Radiohead, Talking Heads, Joy Division, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Warpaint.
What’s the band's biggest claim to fame so far?
At last year’s Cotton Cloud festival we played the same stage as The Sugarhill Gang.
What’s your songwriting process?
Its very natural and spontaneous, a lot of songs come from us jamming, noticing an idea and building upon it.
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
Warpaint or Drenge, two bands we’re big fans of and love seeing what they bring live.
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
David Byrne (lead vocals), Tom Verlaine (Guitar), Thurston Moore (Guitar), Jenny Lee Lingberg (Bass), Clem Burke (Drums) and Clint Boom (Keys) for that Oldham touch.
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
On stage we play to each other, there’s a kind of intimate energy.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
Whenever we play in Manchester we eat at Northern Soul MCR, to get a pre-gig toastie. We’re dreaming of the day for our picture on the wall.
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
Ellis – Cornettos (strictly classic)
Jacob – Every Beano Issue 1990-2000, stacked in chronological order (NO DANDYS)
Neil – A Meditation temple
This question is for all band members. If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?
Neil – Robbie Williams – She’s the one
Jacob – Natalie Imbruglia – Torn
Ellis – Corinne Bailey Rae - Paris Nights/New York Mornings
Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band
We were all TV child stars.
If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?
We’re all over social media, currently looking for endorsements on Linkedin… Alternatively type ‘Gardenback’ in Spotify, Apple Music, Soundcloud, Youtube, Bandcamp for our music. We even have our own website gardenback.co.uk.
Finally, What does the future hold for the band?
More releases throughout the year, a big end of year gig and inevitably selling out.
