HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH GUM SOUL
Who are Gum Soul?
Gum Soul has always been a kind of on-going solo project for me (Curtis), I've had a few of the songs for a good year or so but was in a previous band so they never saw the light of day. I was scoping out musicians to help me bring the songs to life, fortunately Rory (guitair), Nic (Bass) and Jake (drums) are all close friends of mine and agreed to play. We've actually only been playing together for about 4 or 5 months I would say.
Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?
We had just finished a rehearsal and were waiting for the bus, spending at least half an hour trying to chose a band name, for us it wasn't anything deep- I was wearing gum soled shoes and we just liked the name. Changing the 'sole' to 'soul' was a conscious decision- it looked better as well opening the name up for more interpretation.
If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?
Unbiased, good riffs, good laughs
Who are your biggest influences musically?
Our Girl, Drenge, Dead Pretties, Ty Segall
What’s the band's biggest claim to fame so far?
Played the same stage as Robert Plant
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
Shame - they look like a proper laugh, similar music to us and we love them.
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
Nic - Tina Weymouth
Curtis - Joe Bonamassa
Jake - John Bonham
Rory - Prince
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
Slightly intense, but songs to make you move and nod your head.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
To be honest we've just started to shout random things before we go out onstage, I guess it's just to slightly release the excitement/energy
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
To be honest we're not looking for much, I think we can all come down to one parallel decision- beer.
This question is for all band members. If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?
Speaking for the band overall the biggest guilty pleasure would have to be ABBA- personally speaking for me it has to be Nelly Furtado (voice of an angel)
Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band
Nic is from Liverpool
If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?
Definitely Facebook or Instagram, Instagram you can kind of see behind the scenes and generally how stupid we are.
Finally, What does the future hold for the band?
We want to move forward as a band, get on some good line ups and try and support some sick bands. We're going to continue writing and get some singles released. I think we generally just want to keep enjoying ourselves and see where the band takes us.
