HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH LOUIS ANTONIOU
Who is Louis Antoniou?
My man, the mystery, the legend... I'm an alt rock singer-songwriter, trapped in the 1960's, born and bred from Watford. I've been working the circuit for about year & a half/two years in London. Last year I got my full band together, so I like to think of that as my first proper year as before hand I was just working acoustic gigs and was very much in a different frame of mind.
If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?
My music would be 'Groovy, gritty, bluesy, revolutionary and tongue-in-cheek (although that's kind of 3 words aha), so maybe provocative.
Who are your biggest influences musically?
I love for the 60's era of music, the kind of bluesy bands like The Doors, Hendrix & Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac. So I'm trying to combine an old sound with modern day influences like Black Keys. I like to think my lyrics are from a poetry background, as opposed to your standard pop chart shit, formulated cliche crap (pardon my French). I never want one song to make you feel just one emotion, I want you to laugh, cry, be jovial, and all the rest of it.
What’s the band's biggest claim to fame so far?
I once did a solo gig supporting Tony Christie. I think I've peeked with that personally.
What’s your songwriting process?
The 'how long is a piece of string,' question ya know. If a songwriter has a strict procedure for this, please let me know. I think mine is sit on a riff for a while, look at my lyrical ramblings I've jotted down on my phone or notepad, and try and merge the two together somehow aha. In saying that, I always know what message I want to convey in a song before I start piecing it together, or what I want the song to be about.
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
I'd love to support someone like L.A Salami, he seems like a rather interesting chap. He's a rising phoenix that guy, I love his songwriting style and lyrical content. Either him or Shame because they're like bats of hell, they're wild!
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
Okay I'm going for a 5 man band so hear me out. Front man is Father John Misty. I think that flamboyant, almost ironically ostentatious style is rock n roll at its finest. Hendrix and Marr on guitars, imagine the sounds they would produce! Bass it's gotta be Flea really. Drums I'm going for John Bonham.
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
Every show gets wilder, weirder things happen on stage. I recently had my shirt, shoes and socks off, strutting around on stage. It's always fun, groovy and interactive.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
No rituals sadly. I try and do a vocal warm up if I have the time and space to do so.
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
What about something like 50 puppies in your dressing room, but all different breeds. That would certainly settle any nerves before a show.
If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?
Haha great question. Unfortunately my music library on my iPod ceases to exist anymore, such are the current times, but I suppose I'm guilty of a bit of Tom Jones every now and then. Is he a guilty pleasure? In all honesty, one of my most played songs in 2017 on Spotify was Vengaboys 'We Like to Party,' but that's another story aha.
Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band.
I'm not lactose intolerant.
If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?
Facebook or Instagram people! https://www.facebook.com/Louisantonioumusic
Finally, What does the future hold for the band?
2018 should be a big year for me. I'm releasing 5 singles between Feb and June, got some exciting things in the pipeline and lots more recording. I've got a release show at Ryan's N16 in Stoke Newington February 17th for my single 'You Ain't The Girl,' which comes out on the Friday 16th Feb. Come along for the ride people! x
