HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH THE MOCKING JAYS
Who are The Mocking Jays? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together etc
A dynamic sexy, funky, dirty, pop quintet from Nottingham in the East Midlands. The group consists of Jacob (vocals), Lewis (guitar), George (guitar), Alex (bass) and Sam (drums).
The band originally started as a 3 piece back in 2013 with Jacob, Sam and Alex whilst they were studying their A Levels. Jacob would eventually meet Lewis in 2014 whilst stacking shelves at his local Coop. The two immediately became soul brothers and Lewis joined the band. In 2017, George was asked to join the band. We had a vision and needed a man of many talents to help us achieve a sound we felt and still feel is fresh and unique. So really, we’ve only been going as this outfit for two years!
Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?
To cut a long story short, our original name was taken away due to copyright issues with another band. Both our names sounded similar so they politely asked us to change otherwise the law would get involved! At the time, it was very annoying but turned out to be a blessing in disguise! Jacob eventually came up with The Mocking Jays after watching the first Hunger Games film and thought it had a decent ring to it. It’s stuck with us since!
If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?
Sexy, Funky, Dirty, Relatable and Pop.
Who are your biggest influences musically?
Tough question as we have varied music tastes...but we would probably say the following work for everyone:
Red Hot Chili Peppers
What’s the band's biggest claim to fame so far?
In our eyes, there’s a few but probably the biggest has to be Bearded Theory Festival in 2017. We opened up the main stage for some of our heroes and were treated like royalty by the festival organisers and backline crew. That’s when it certainly felt very real! It inspired us to work hard and keep pushing.
What’s your songwriting process?
A secret! For the most part, we can’t really say as some of our bigger and well known songs were written completely in the moment. There was no plan, it was almost like they wrote themselves if that makes sense? But for other tunes, it’s been a case of someone will come to the rehearsal room with a chord progression or melody and it’s worked on. We normally have the song ready within an hour or so. Whether it’s good or not is a different story!
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
Again, tough question as we all have our personal favourites! We’re happy to tour with anyone! It’s a very difficult to give an answer but we’d probably say someone like the Arctic Monkeys purely because we all dig their music.
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
Vocals - Freddie Mercury
Guitar - Jimi Hendrix
Bass - Geddy Lee
Drums - John Bonham
How sick would that be?!
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
An experience. We don’t use backing tracks or click tracks, everything is live. We put on a show, something for you to watch as well as listen. It’s a magical carpet ride of sexy, funky, dirty, pop music.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
At bigger shows, we normally get together just before show time and mentally prepare ourselves by pacing about and being idiots. We’ll have a drink to calm any nerves... normally a few toilet trips follow and we’re ready to go. After the gig, we’ll all have a hug backstage, apologies to each-other for any mistakes and head to Merch table to meet and greet!
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
Chilled bottled water, Fresh Fruit, Jack Daniels, Dark Rum, Dr Pepper, Sausage Rolls. Now that’s a rider!
