HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH PRIMAL
Who is ...? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together etc
PRIMAL is Rory Wilson (Vocals) Dan Bigland (Guitar) Greg Mcandry (Drums) We are all from the Notts Derby area of the Midlands. Rory and Dan met at school and have been in many bands and music acts since meeting. Greg was recruited shortly after forming the band.
Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?
Rory originally started a self-titled EP under his own name called Primal, after forming a full band we decided this fit the sound of our music. Our use of the polar bear across our artwork has also been influenced by the name Primal.
If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?
Big Anthemic Dirty Blues Rock
Who are your biggest influences musically?
Old: Led Zep, Thin Lizzy, Sabbath, Howlin Wolf, Johnny Cash, Elvis - New: Rival Sons, Black Keys, Deap Vally, Jamiroquai, White Stripes
What’s the band's biggest claim to fame so far?
As a new band (6 months of gigging) we think playing in Soho and Sheffield Tramlines festival will be our biggest highlights
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
Deap Vally - Their sound is incredible, I love their style and tone. They are really nice girls too.
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
Jay Buchanan (Rival sons) on Vox, Bonham on drums, Hendrix on guitar & Flea on bass!
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
An energetic display of blues rock, with elements of indie and melody as a cherry on top.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
We love to sacrifice at least 4 people before a gig (joking) we tend to just have a wonder and talk to other bands to get to know them. Then we usually go for drinks post gig.
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
60s Black Mustang, with a full tank.
This question is for all band members. If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?
Rory: I have a lot of Rihanna on my playlists, I like her vocal tone paired with the accent. Dan: Ricky Martin (Tumbleweed sound) Greg: I’d probably say I love The Darkness, I own all their albums and have seen them live many times, I’m a sucker for their indulgent guitar solos and Justin Hawkins’ high pitched vocals!
Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band
We used to be in an ABBA tribute band prior to Primal... Ha jokes... Well, Rory was originally going to play rhythm guitar or drums, but he only decided to sing because we did a recording and it sounded pretty cool with his vox on.
Finally, What does the future hold for the band?
We plan to release a lot of music. We all love playing and writing, a lot of our stuff is self-recorded and produced so we have the capacity to make a lot of EPs and albums. We are intent on a European tour at some point too!
