HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH ROXANNE KELLY
Who is Roxanne Kelly? Where are you from, how long have you been playing music etc
I was born and raised in London by my Irish father and Costa Rican mother. I began singing, acting and dancing at the New London Performing Arts Centre from the age of 3 and a half. Music was very prominent in my household, I grew up listening to a huge range of music from Reggaeton to Irish Traditional!
I got a First-Class BA (Honours) degree in Music from the University of Nottingham and am now doing my Masters at The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance. I love singing and have performed in notable venues in the UK and Europe like Notre Dame Cathedral, RADA Theatre and the BBC Hippodrome.
If you had to describe your sound using just five words, what would they be?
Pop, real, emotional, soulful and honest
Who are your biggest influences musically?
It is so hard to say, I have so many artists that I love. I’d say Justin Timberlake and would love to write music like his 20/20 Experience album. Adele and Ariana Grande and two female artists that have had a huge influence on my music style.
What’s your songwriting process?
I’d say I have three ways of writing songs they either start with a little tune or a sentence or a chord that I love the sound of. Most often it happens with a phrase and a chord progression then I build the song around that. I like to write about my experiences and feelings.
When you were younger, what was the first album that blew you away and you remember putting on repeat non-stop?
I was totally a typical girl of the 90s, listening to Steps, S Club 7 and the Spice Girls. I’m pretty sure S Club Party was like my anthem when I was 6! But I have to say that my mum raised me on the 3 Michaels – Michael Jackson, Michael Bublé and Michael Bolton. How Am I Supposed to Live Without You was a tune back in the day and still is now!
As a performer, what’s your biggest claim to fame so far?
I once represented Costa Rica for a film premiere where I saw Rowan Atkinson, Prince Charles and met Camilla (Duchess of Cornwall). I also won a Jack Petchey award for a performance.
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
Ariana Grande or Camilla Cabello. I’m a huge fan of Ariana, I love how she has developed as an artist, her Dangerous Woman album was awesome and her latest song No Tears Left to Cry is such a great song! But Camilla would be awesome as well because her debut album is so great!
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
That is so tough! Can we just create like an awesome boy band? I’d have Bruno Mars, Justin Timberlake, I might through in Ady Sulieman to give some vocal depth to the group and maybe throw in someone like Stevie Wonder or Michael Jackson just for fun haha!
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
Currently acoustic intimate sessions, with my music I feel like my live shows are a complete insight into my soul.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
I always pray and breathe, that’s it really.
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
I feel like I’d have to be really naughty and have something like Percy Pigs because those are my favourite sweets ever!
If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?
I’m not sure if it’s still in my itunes library but probably something like Wake Me Up Before You Go Go!!
Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about you
I have no idea! But people are always shocked that I don’t really like cake, I feel like you can’t be British and not like cake, people react like it’s a sin hahaha!!
If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?
www.roxannekellymusic.com there they will find all my latest music, videos and social media channels.
Finally, What does the future hold for you as an artist?
I would love to release an EP by the end of the year and develop a full band setup. I’m writing new music and I just can’t wait for people to hear it.
