HOT VOX POP QUIZ WITH SPHYNX
Todays HOT VOX Pop Quiz is with Sphynx
Who are Sphynx?
We're a band of 3 best friends who grew up together in Austin, Texas. Cory and I met when we were 2 years old and Todd came into the picture when we were 15. We've been making music together for 13 years, 8 of those years as Sphynx.
Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?
Soon after we started the band we were offered a show in Austin with Of Montreal. We accepted as we're big fans of the band but we didn't have a name yet so we scrambled to think of one and Sphynx is what we landed on. We liked the way the word looked aesthetically and the image of the mythical creature.
If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?
Danceable, Groovy, Euphoric, Captivating, Glitzy
Who are your biggest influences musically?
David Bowie & Prince. We love artists who are able to make pop music with experimentation and find success. It's a balance we strive for. They were both incredible performers as well, we pay a lot of attention to that side of things and artists like them definitely laid the groundwork.
What’s the band's biggest claim to fame so far?
In 2014, the mayor of Austin invited us to play at City Hall and proclaimed Feb 13 'Sphynx Day' in Austin. Having a day in our hometown is pretty surreal and always a cause for celebration when Feb 13 rolls around.
What’s your songwriting process?
All three of us write and produce a lot. We bounce songs back and forth on dropbox and finish them together in the studio once they get to a certain point. We've written plenty of songs together in a room but love the flexibility that we have working on laptops and sharing sessions with each other.
If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?
Janelle Monae. We're massive fans of her as a songwriter and a performer. Her show is unreal, seeing her perform every night would be amazing.
If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?
Nile Rodgers, Phil Collins, The Revolution, Brian Eno, Nina Simone - that'd be a pretty nice group we think!
How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?
It's a dance party and a communal experience. The live show has an element of glam rock and old fashioned power trios, but we use synths and the beats are heavy and modern.
Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?
We like to have a little whiskey - bourbon if it's available. A little bit helps the vocal chords, or at least that's what we tell ourselves.
What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?
A hot tub. That would feel really nice post gig, you get a little stiff being compressed in a van all day and we've always enjoyed a nice soak. We don't imagine many clubs would honor the request but hey, the worst thing they can say is no, right?
If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?
Hmm, we're all fans of pop music so you'd find some Carly Rae Jepson, Selena Gomez, Ariana Grande, etc. We're not embarrassed about those though! Maybe our deep collection of pop punk from our middle school days?
Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band.
As we mentioned earlier, Cory & I have been friends since we were two. On top of that, Todd is married to Cory's sister, making Sphynx a family band really. We're essentially brothers.
If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?
Our website, www.sphynxmusic.com, you'll find all of our videos, music, & tour dates there! You can also join our mailing list for exclusive content.
Finally, What does the future hold for the band?
In the immediate future we'll be releasing a single in early 2019 and doing some touring in the US before performing at SXSW festival in Austin. We'll be making a return to the UK in 2019 as well, hopefully sooner rather than later!
