My Playlist by Earthsea

Ever wondered what music your favourite band listens too? What songs inspire the best songwriters?

In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favourite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what songs shaped them to be the musicians and artists they are today and what’s on their Spotify Playlist.

Today’s playlist is curated by the band Earthsea

Who is Earthsea?

Dom, Jamie, James and Will. Four human mammals, lost on a ball. We like making music and other noises together.

For those that don’t know Earthsea, describe your act in just a few sentences.

A bit like if elbow did a song with nine inch nails. We try and keep it interesting.

Earthsea's Playlist

Song from the first album you ever bought/listened to?

Fatboy slim - Praise you (off you’ve come a long way baby). Yeah, my mum bought it for me. What of it? It's pretty good, eh?

A song you wish you had written?
Bonnie Riatt - I can’t make you love me, which is obviously a glorious bit of songwriting - you can learn everything I still haven’t learned from that song. Clarity, honesty. Each word is the truth. It’s the sort of thing Hemmingway might write if he had time between killing lions with his beard to write songs.

A song that inspires you?
Elbow - Mirrorball. A bit like the Bonnie Riatt - a simple song about something complicated. It's perfect.

Last song you purchased?
Will bought Amanda Palmer's newest via his patreon subscription. The last track on the album is Amanda Palmer - Death Thing, so I suppose that's it. She's a hero who has a lot of interesting things to say about creativity and how not to starve while doing it.

A song that makes you feel nostalgic?
Muse - New Born
The whole bloody album throbs with nostalgia for me, to the extent that I have to ration it these days. Those neurones are already so overstimulated, if they get any bigger I won’t remember any other music ever again.

Your favourite sing-along song in the shower?
NIN - All the love in the world
The great thing about this is that it repeats itself a lot, so you can fit it to the length of any shower.

A song that confirmed your love for music?
Dire Straits - Brothers in Arms. Remember hearing these as a kid and wondering how you made those noises.

A song you put on when getting ready for a big night out?
Radiohead - Exit music (for a film)
Who goes out? There’s so much introspection to be getting on with

The song do you put on repeat if you’ve just had your heart broken?

Fleetwood Mac - Little Lies
James - pretty much all of  Fleetwood Mac's songs are about heatbreak, but this one cuts deep every time.

Your worst guilty pleasure song?

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal
James - this song combines the most maligned genre of music in recent times (nu metal) with someone we can't listen to anymore, because of all the bad stuff.  It has a killer video.
