WAXING LYRICAL WITH PROJECT CULTURE

As an integral part of any song, lyrics act a way for artists to divulge their thoughts with listeners, but with so many songs out there, how can you be sure to hear all of these messages?

To grasp these hidden meanings, we have asked PROJECT CULTURE to showcase some of their favourite, original lyrics and are pleased to feature them as our Waxing Lyrical!

Today’s Waxing Lyrical With PROJECT CULTURE dives into the lyrics of their song ‘THE ELEPHANT ROOM’.

Project Culture is an Indie Rock band from East London, with some of their biggest influences being The Smiths, Vampire Weekend, Arcade Fire, Car Seat Headrest and Talking Heads. The three members all met at Queen Mary University and, frustrated by the lack of a music scene on their campus, took matters into their own hands by organizing their own live music nights at their student bar and pubs in the local Mile End area. The band have since released their debut EP 'The Elephant Room', and they hope to spend the rest of the year recording their debut album, which will be out before the end of the year, and growing as a live act.

Meaning behind the lyrics:

The title of the song comes from the saying 'the elephant in the room' which refers to a blatant issue that everyone's choosing to ignore. In contrast to this, I created the concept of 'The Elephant Room', which is the place where you hide your own personal problems and insecurities that you're choosing to ignore, this being more internal than the saying which inspired the song. The verses and bridge of the song detail the various troubles that the speaker is facing, be it frequent change and the burden of dreams (first verse), social anxiety (second verse), or the feeling that a person that they care about doesn't notice them (bridge). The speaker knows that it's not healthy to bottle things up, but they don't know how to open up to others, and instead choose to 'turn a blind eye' to their problem, and ultimately always revert back to the chorus, maintaining that they 'won't show anybody what's in The Elephant Room'.

Lyrics:

There’s always something changing
Well what did you expect?
Sometimes these dreams feel like
The albatross ‘round my neck

And these days only seem to betray me now
Yeah lately time it’s been watering my dreams down
Memories only seem to betray me now

I won’t show anybody
What’s in the elephant room
Turn a blind eye if you wanna
It’s right in front of you
I won’t show anybody
What’s in the elephant room
I’m always looking away

I’ve got a thing for awkward silences
I stick out like a sore thumb
God I must seem so obvious
About as subtle as the barrel of a gun

And these thoughts only seem to betray me now
The things I hear when they think I’m still around
Memories only seem to betray me now

I won’t show anybody
What’s in the elephant room
Turn a blind eye if you wanna
It’s right in front of you
I won’t show anybody
What’s in the elephant room
I’m always looking away

Do I even cross your mind?
Do you see me when I’m walking
Here at your side?
It’s not like I’m holding out for much
I give you every opportunity

I won’t show anybody
What’s in the elephant room
Turn a blind eye if you wanna
It’s right in front of you
I won’t show anybody
What’s in the elephant room
I’m always looking away
