Ever wondered what music your favourite band listens to? What songs inspire the best songwriters?
In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favourite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what songs shaped them to be the musicians and artists they are today and what’s on their Spotify Playlist.
Today’s playlist is curated by WKTD
WKTD are an indie-rock band hailing from Bedfordshire. With the success of their debut EP “How to Decorate Time”, and their name solidified in the industry, WKTD look to expand upon their discography, with many fans awaiting the well anticipated release of live-favourite “The Garden”, expected to arrive this summer.
Their creative energy rooting from their well-crafted music is emulated live through their exhilarating performances, most notably their sell-out headliner earlier this year, sparking excitement surrounding the band’s future and what it holds. Taking inspiration from indie phenomenons such as Sam Fender, Inhaler, Arctic Monkeys, WKTD promise to offer something for everyone.
Who is WKTD?
WKTD is myself(Jay) Joel, Toby, Jamie and Dan. We’re all 18.
For those that don’t know WKTD, describe your act in just a few sentences.
We’re a 5 piece alternative rock band from Bedford, heavy into that “guitar music” kind of rebirth of genre, if you will. We’re big on live performance and we want to create a community within our music that provides this kind of relatability for fans and musicians alike, definitely.
Playlist Songs
Song from the first album you ever bought/listened to?
I definitely can’t remember the first album I listened to, but the first one that had a massive influence on me was probably Sting’s “Ten Summoner’s Tales”. In particular the song “Seven Days”. I remember my dad showing me it when I was like 15, was probably one of the first times I had properly listened to a song in an obscure time signature, and was one of these moments of enlightenment. His session players are incredible as well, really brought about this idea of being in a band to light, I guess.
A song you wish you had written?
“Fake Plastic Trees” by Radiohead, absolute classic. The amount of emotion that Thom Yorke puts into it is beyond admirable from a songwriting perspective, and if you don’t wish you wrote a Radiohead song are you really a songwriter anyway to be fair.
A song that inspires you?
A song that has always inspired me from the very beginning of the band is probably “Seventeen Going Under” by Sam Fender. Lives and breathes Springsteen, something my Mum has always been into, and the structure of the song and the way it builds just seems to have an influence on any of the stuff I write, sometimes even a little too much truthfully.
Last song you purchased?
Last song I purchased was “Dive” by Olivia Dean. I love Olivia Dean, and her vocals are just incredible, and yeah I just really liked the track, not much more to say. 99p on iTunes feels like a bit of a steal to be honest.
A song that makes you feel nostalgic?
My nostalgia song is 100% “1979” by Smashing Pumpkins. During Covid it was one of the first songs I picked up my guitar to learn, and ever since then, every time it comes on, just reminds me of learning a song for the first time and that feeling it gives you.
Your favourite sing-along song in the shower?
Will not lie, it’s “Ballad of a Homeschool Girl” by Olivia Rodrigo. It goes so unnecessarily hard.
A song that confirmed your love for music?
“Purple” by Wunderhorse. Wunderhorse are my absolute favourite band. I’ve seen them live multiple times now, and every time Purple is played it just makes me smile without even realising. Shows what music can do to you psychologically, and this song just confirmed for me that this is really what I want to do.
A song you put on when getting ready for a big night out?
Big night out needs a bit of Fontaines DC, so “Starburster” during pre-drinks definitely. Love that song so much, and I don’t know many people who don’t like it so is probably a reasonable option for aux.
The song do you put on repeat if you’ve just had your heart broken?
“Beach Baby” by Bon Iver. Prime example in music of less is more, this song just hits differently. Bon Iver is a musical genius. The ending is just 10/10.
Your worst guilty pleasure song?
Not even joking, it’s “Taste” by Sabrina Carpenter. It’s not even a guilty pleasure anymore, I’m very open to tell people it’s one of my favourite songs at the moment
