Earning his stripes by sharing the stage with legends John Jorgensen (Elton John), Mel C, Jerry Donahue, Albert Lee, Martin Taylor, and Tommy Emmanuel, Ben Hughes has also been a consistent MD and performer in nostalgia concert show RFM performing to over 95,000 people across the UK, Ireland and Europe. Co-writing with Amy Wadge (Ed Sheeran) Thomas J Speight, Billy Kinsley, Richard Turvey (Vitamin), Mike Halls (Clean Cut Kid) Tricia McTeague (Paul Van Dyke), Henry Priestman (The Christians) and Lotte Mullan, the Liverpudlian singer songwriter has truly found his sound.
He is influenced by a combination of lush soundscape backdrops reminiscent of Jon Hopkins, Bonobo and Nightmares On Wax, but with a harder edge and a distorted acoustic guitar as the central glue. Blending these diverse musical influences cohesively, Ben Hughes’s music is like nothing you’ve heard before. It is three things all at once: a poetic and lush soundscape, virtuosic acoustic playing all grounded in soulful pop songwriting with the typical influences you may imagine. The culmination of the acoustic guitar, merged with the hallmark elements of structurally familiar pop music and electronic dance – but with Ben’s understanding of his instrument at the forefront.
Ben has been frequently heard on BBC radio Merseyside, Salford radio, Ulster Radio and Soho Radio in London, promoting his endless gigging schedule and string of small supports including Dave Maccabe (The Zutons) Thomas J Speight, Tommy Emmanuel, Dave O’Grady band, Clive Carroll, Andy McKee, Adam Palma, Michelle Lawson and Sam Green and The Midnight Heist. He has also had a string of his own corporate shows with Scarlett Entertainment and Tracy Levin Events.
A longtime pupil of guitar virtuoso Tommy Emmanuel, Ben has even caught the attentions of creative speaker Sir Ken Robinson and TED Talks leading to playing alongside some of the world’s leading artists including Sir Paul McCartney and Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac.
Ben recently performed at The Village stage at Fieldview Festival 2015 and is due to play again in 2016. He is on tour with RFM in late October reprising his role as MD and singer/guitarist, this time alongside original member Rick Vito.
Ben has a run of London showcases coming up including a Christmas party for Hearst Magazine, The Bedford, The Social, Surya and The Regal Rooms. A self taught guitar maestro beginning at just five years old, to watch him play is to watch a master at work. His earliest years as a boxer and martial artist have certainly taught him the necessary discipline and fighting spirit. You can see why all the blood, sweat and tears has affectionately earned him the title ‘The Machine’ and ‘Crazy Fingers’ to his peers and fans alike. He is a formidable performer and is the real deal. Not to be missed.
