Stephanie Cheape. A girl but also a band, and one of the most exciting talents, individually and as the collective, to come out of Scotland in years.
They’re hot property right now after romping to victory in the inaugural Spotlight With SSE on Capital award, judged by a panel of music industry luminaries who were united in glowing praise of the electrifying performance by the band at the final in St Lukes, Glasgow.
With ongoing support from Capital, the Sunday Mail, SSE, The Hydro and the Scottish Music Awards with Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland – the band performed at the 2017 event and won an army of new fans among the industry’s leading lights – it’s clear this is an act who are going places.
Stephanie the band are Don Wilson, Garry Aird and Johnny Queen along with the leading lady.
She started writing when she was just 16, performing for the first time at a sold-out open mic night just a year later.
With influences ranging from Skunk Anansi, Hard Fi and The Specials to Billy Bragg, Lily Allen and The Clash, Stephanie’s first song Illegal remains a potential smash hit, while latest single Homebird is a beautiful ballad which showcases her stellar voice.
Stephanie explains: “After the open mic night I decided to make a go of it and get my music heard. I’ve been working constantly since then on making music that takes something ugly like poverty or discrimination and tries turn it into something powerful through music.”
So how did Stephanie Cheape, the young girl from Hamilton, become Stephanie Cheape the four piece band? Simple. She met some metalheads.
“I met the band two years ago. They are a bunch of metalheads who had been making music for years. We got together and it worked. The last year has been a huge turning point for us.”
That turning point was sparked when Stephanie performed solo on STV’s popular Riverside Show, her original song Sweet Dreams becoming one of their highest viewed videos ever and provoking a flood of enquiries from viewers and new fans looking for more.
With a truly spectacular voice, a tight, expertly crafted band and the sort of charisma and stage presence that usually comes after decades of experience, Stephanie Cheape is going to be a huge star. The girl AND the band.
Donald Macleod, Chairman, Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy in Scotland: “She might be as the title of her last single suggests a Homebird, but Stephanie Cheape has the songs, voice and swagger to make her mark globally.

“I can’t wait to see how 2018 pans out for the whole group”.
David Farrell, STV: “There is no doubt Stephanie is one of Scotland’s stars of the future, her voice is quite unique and she’s moulded herself into the popstar role.
“Stephanie performed not so long ago on STV2 ‘s Live At Five and I could see the difference since her first TV performance with us, she’s got the star quality now. “I reckon Stephanie could follow in the international success of the likes of Amy MacDonald. Scotland needs a new young music star & Stephanie is well primed to take on that role.”
