If you ever wanted to know what it would sound like if The Beautiful South were being slapped in the face by Tom McRae to the soundtrack of Crowded House songs, played on the ukulele by Leonard Cohen and accompanied by Randy Newman, then welcome to The Sandboys!
Our style is what we call Cellele music – quirky songs that range sonically from the cheerfulness of the ukulele to the broody and emotive cello (and everything in between). The harmonic voices are strong, the lyrics tell stories with a twist, and if that isn’t enough, the melodies will remain in your head long after you run home to escape them.
The Sandboys recently headlined the North Tyneside Ukulele Festival, supported Alabama 3, Chas and Dave, The James Hunter Six and The Amy Winehouse Experience – A.K.A. Lioness over the past couple of years.
Some quotes about our recent album release from the US music press:
“With Cellele Music, The Sandboys have taken a nostalgic sound and updated it, but kept it quite pure. Admittedly, it is hard to describe, but imagine if one could take an urban/folk inspired rhythm, added a jazzy horn section, a cello and replaced guitar with a ukulele, you get a upbeat and quirky sort of toe-tapping love song melody machine. These are some very talented gents and they share their zeal for living with their fans. Rich with emotion, “Glitches, Imperfections & Glorious Quirks” is just that, a celebration of the little things that make us all unique and lovable.”

“When you see the artwork for this album you think you’ll hear a full vintage music style, or old fashion, but trust me: it is not. Once you start hearing it there’s nothing boring about it, it’s a masterpiece that combines a lot of music forms together, from country, rock, ska… it’s a delight for your ears.”

“This quirky British duo has set out to make music that makes them happy, and this meant often coloring outside of the lines so to speak. They have borrowed a bit from a variety of styles to create an upbeat and carefree sound that even though it is different, seems oddly familiar. From a Caribbean flair found in calypso music, bluegrass, country, jazz, pop and folk music nicely in one single package.”
