Fiercely independent and with a lot to say, there’s plenty more to come from Mercy’s Cartel…
Mercy is a hugely charismatic live performer and has supported artists such as Kojey Radical, Etta Bond and Yazmin Lacey. 2018 was a year of rapid progression for Mercy’s Cartel. Since releasing her first single ‘6 tears’ and ‘Vibes Cartel’ EP, Mercy gained the attention of Jamz Supernova at BBC Radio 1Xtra and Trench Magazine, Clash Magazine, London in Stereo and more.
Essex-born and Bristol-based Mercy Sotire created Mercy’s Cartel after being inspired to drop out of University at a Chance The Rapper show, “I admired Chance’s journey and how he became successful without major label backing. I’m inspired by a new wave of artists that are taking control of their artistic destiny.” Co-producing the EP with Bristol-based Outhouse , Mercy’s sonic influences stem from both UK and US R&B, hip hop and trap recall artists like IAMDDB, RAY BLK and Sampa The Great. Nigerian music also impacts Mercy’s creations, with fusions of afrobeat featured throughout.
Currently, Mercy’s Cartel is presenting her new EP, D.Y.E. (06/03/2019), through independent female-championing label Saffron Records. Clean, modern R&B production (that becomes huge when played live) coupled with Mercy’s warm, unique and wide-ranging vocal performance create an expansive sounding collection of tracks.D.Y.E. is an acronym for Doubt Your Existence – a title which is expressed through lyrical themes of self-challenge, bereavement, relationship deterioration and an ongoing struggle with mental health. With such weighty subject matter, Mercy’s vocal is intensely emotional, yet delivered with a sense of knowing wryness, maintaining a sense of fun and great depth of character.
With funding and support from The MOBO Awards and Help Musicians UK, Mercy is heading out on a 4-date UK tour, performing in Birmingham, Manchester, London and Bristol.
