Maija Sofia

About

Maija Sofia is a singer/songwriter from Galway but currently spends her time between Dublin and London. Her songs blend soft intimate vocals with sparse harp melodies and raw electric guitar before filtering it all through a dark lo-fi layer. Drawing on 1960s folk-psychedelia and 1990s shoegaze, her sound references nostalgic elements of both. Fans and critics have likened her to a vast array of influences such Grouper, Mazzy Star, PJ Harvey, and Syd Barrett – she has even been called 'Kate Bush on acid' – but invariably the conclusion is made that her style is entirely her own. In recent months her disconcerting lyrics and ethereal melodies have earned her notable recognition in Ireland and beyond.
