Wolf Suit

About

The pack was formed quite organically. Tom (guitar) & Joanne (vocals) have played together for years and wanted to embark on something further ambitious to achieve a sound that could only be attributed to Wolf Suit, that moves forward with consistence and a strong sense of direction. At the foot of the idea, Michael (bassist), was all of a sudden everywhere! Perfectly queued ready to form part of the backbone. After discussions of The Doors’ unique brilliance and the use of purple suits and bow ties on stage, there could be no other contender for the role. Nath is Tom’s brother and they have also played in bands together in the past. He was ready to begin something afresh and became the other part of the band’s backbone, the drummer. Moody was playing in another project involving Joanne and she poached him for his beautiful (brass) instrument.

The music itself is in part fuelled by the driving and poly rhythms of Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band, how to achieve this kind of contained and shifting primitive power, whilst drawing from Hendrix’s texture and sonic psychedelics. This combined with a pinch of the wildness and raw power tapped into by bands like the Stooges, with leanings toward the heaviness and grunge of those such as Queens of the Stone Age, Black Sabbath, and Nirvana. Bowie and Roxy Music are sighted as other influences.

Tom physically builds and develops the sound of the band by making his own effects pedals from scratch, creating guitar and bass boards designed purely for Wolf Suit. Valve amps are chosen for their warm presence, and drum skins for a particular kind of thuddiness (you’d have to ask the drummer).

Since forming in 2016, Wolf Suit have mainly played around the midlands, and in recent months have been taking time over studio recordings – carefully nurturing the collected works for results that best represent the band – with all of the subtleties and textures coming across without losing the live and present feel. Next for the band is to branch out of their midlands home as much as possible to play a variety of venues and festivals around the country, to gather fans, and to breach borders and take the music further afield.
