Burntwood

We all remember hearing that one song that changed everything we thought we knew about music. Well, we can’t get enough of new music, and ‘Making Waves’ is your guide to the new artists disrupting the scene…

Making Waves today is Indicator Species by Burntwood !

Burntwood combine inventive songwriting with expansive atmospherics. They incorporate elements of post-rock, americana and alternative. The London four-piece are set to release their debut record in the summer of 2025.

Evoking Wilco, Pixies and The Replacements, big melodies lie at the heart of the songs. With songwriting shared between Chris Hornsby (Lead vocals & guitar), Simon Shippey (vocals, guitar & keys) and Tim Thackray (vocals, bass), there’s an eclectic energy to their output, which flexes from raucous 3-minute numbers to more expansive explorations. Completed by drummer John Singh, Burntwood has shaped their live set in the past 12 months.

Their latest single, “Indicator Species,” is a compelling preview of what’s to come. The track, which takes its name from Shippey’s fascination with fungi and their role as markers of environmental health, is both thematically urgent and musically bold. Addressing mankind’s destructive relationship with nature in the pursuit of progress, “Indicator Species” blends a country-rock riff with frantic synth-bass lines, before bursting into a swaggering, memorable chorus. It’s the third single from their upcoming debut and offers a glimpse into the ambitious scope of the full record.
