Shallow Honey

Ever wondered what music your favourite band listens to? What songs inspire the best songwriters?

In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favourite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what songs shaped them to be the musicians and artists they are today and what’s on their Spotify Playlist.

Today’s playlist is curated by Shallow Honey

Shallow Honey are an Alt-Rock / Dirty Pop four piece from the UK’s South Coast. The band deliver ‘melt your face’ guitar riffs, mixed with dirty, fuzz driven bass, hard hitting drums and feminist lyrics delivered with a theatrical sense of tongue-in-cheek humour.

Their singles ‘Explain’, ‘Draw the Line’, ‘Control’ and ‘Emily Doe’ have received huge support, being played on BBC Introducing the South, Sussex Music Magazine, Global Voice and Slack City Radio. Through 2022 the band have played prestigious venues such as Brighton’s ‘The Green Door Store’ and New Cross London’s ‘Amersham Arms’. In September they also joined Melita Dennett for a BBC Introducing Live Lounge on BBC Sussex & Surrey.

Shallow Honey

Who is Shallow Honey?

Shallow Honey; -South coast quiet/ loud Alt rock with ripples from early 90’s.

For those that don’t know your band, describe your act in just a few sentences.

50% Female, ambitious ,ready to connect.

“ a bunch of flowers laced with dynamite”

Song from the first album you ever bought/listened to?

‘Son of a Mustang ford’ by Swervedriver.

Part of a creation compilation I got free with N.M.E, was the soundtrack to my paper round for months.

A song you wish you had written?

‘Mayonnaise’ by Smashing pumpkins.

Always come back to this track from one of my favourite albums ( Siamese Dream)

A song that inspires you?

‘Careful’ by Sebadoh

They always have an interesting choice of chords, things that shouldn’t work, but do and usually record in 1 take regardless of the outcome.

Last song you purchased?

‘Sick as a Dog’  by A VOID

From their recently released album ‘Dissociation’

They have a great stage presence and usually end up in a pile on the drum kit!

A song that makes you feel nostalgic?

‘Radio ga-ga’ by Queen

I Remember my parents would always put on Queen and we’d all sing along in the car together.

Your favourite sing-along song in the shower?

‘Build me up Buttercup’ by the foundations.

But could be any other motown or 60’s funk/ soul that’s ‘surfaced’

A song that confirmed your love for music?

‘SPEEDING 72’ by Momma

Heard this and was blown away by how young they all are and how they’ve captured the sound from before they were even born so perfectly, it restored my faith in music for their generation.

A song you put on when getting ready for a big night out?

‘In Bloom’. By Nirvana.

Very few decent tracks begin with a full band kicking down the doors like this does, never gets old.

The song do you put on repeat if you’ve just had your heart broken?

‘ANOTHER SPACE SONG’ by Failure

Beautifully melancholic, using space as a metaphor for heartbreak, massively underrated band spanning the last 3 decades.

Your worst guilty pleasure song?

Anything by Dua Lipa, she has a very soothing voice!
