Hard to Believe

Gabriel Byrd

Who is Gabriel Byrd? Where are you from, how long have you been playing music etc

Someone writing Rock & Roll music in the 21st Century.
I was born in the countryside of Brazil, where we have farms, mountains, and waterfalls, kinda B side of my country. Nothing to do with the usual beach, Carnival and Samba propaganda. I’ve been living in the EU/UK since 2013.

I come from a musical family, I started to learn piano by the age of 10 encouraged by my grandma but by the age of 12 swapped to the guitar, influenced by the vinyl collection of my dad, it was when I discovered British and American rock music.

If you had to describe your sound using just five words, what would they be?

Honest, Organic, Mystical, Melodic, Fierce

Who are your biggest influences musically?

I think it needs to be Led Zeppelin, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and old blues musicians, but there’s loads of good music out there…
I also have to mention names as Nina Simone, Astor Piazzola, Yes, Erik Satie, Crosby Stills Nash & Young…

What’s your songwriting process?

Most of the times I’m improvising on Guitar, Piano, Mandolin or any instrument I play, and I find some motif that calls my attention, It can be a melody, a riff, a groove or whatever, then I build the structure and the lyrics around it

When you were younger, what was the first album that blew you away and you remember putting on repeat non-stop?

Animals – Pink Floyd

As a performer, what’s your biggest claim to fame so far?

To make a living with my original music and to help people in need

If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?

Tedeschi Trucks Band or The Rolling Stones.
Tedeschi Trucks Band was the best music concert I have ever seen, regarding performance and dynamics.
The Stones because come on, it’s only Rock and Roll. The aristocracy

If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?

Billy Preston – Keys
John Paul Jones – Bass
Dr. Steve Gadd or Mitch Michell – Drums
Doris Troy & Sam Brown – Backing Vocals
That’s a tricky question…

How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?

A magnetic, soulful and intense rock encounter

Do you have any pre-gig or post-gig rituals? If so, what and why?

I warm up and sing a bit before the gig to keep the fingers’ motion going and keep the lyrics fresh in my mind. At the venue, before I go to the stage, I face myself in the mirror and reaffirm a promise I made years ago

What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?

A ’59 Gibson Les Paul and an Orange Amp in the dressing room would be fine, I’m a simple man…

If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?

haha probably Super Freak by Rick James. Jackson 5? Carla Bruni?

Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about you

I like to draw, Dystopian Sci-Fi, and Modern Art. I speak 3 languages.

If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?

Finally, What does the future hold for you as an artist?

The Future is now
