Holozoa

We sat down with Holozoa to find out what makes them tick…

In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favourite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what shaped them into the artist they are today

Today we’re featuring Holozoa

A project conceived during late night immersive theatre tech rehearsals by London based Sound Designer – Composer Lex Kosanke and Sheffield based Performer – Director Lauren Partridge, ‘Holozoa’ seek to capture the dark drama of the dance floor.

You’ll find their blend of soaring emotive vocals and restless, heavy electronics on their debut EP ‘Lore’, with the songs receiving radio play on BBC Introducing Sheffield. ‘Control’ has since featured on Out Now Magazine’s Top 50 songs playlist whilst RGM reviewed ‘Wych’ as a ‘boundary pusher’ with its ‘minimalist composure and dreamy vocals.’

Holozoa

Lauren and Lex

Who are Holozoa? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together, etc.

We met working at immersive dining company Gingerline in London and during late night technical rehearsals in 2019 decided it would be fun to write some music together. Although we now live in different cities, London and Sheffield, we haven’t let that stop us working together on this project.

Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?

It means ‘All of life’ which felt evocative and ambiguous.

If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?

Dark and moody pop tunes

Who are your biggest influences musically?

Kate Bush, Bjork, PJ Harvey, Robyn, Moderat, Bicep, Jon Hopkins

What’s the band’s biggest claim to fame so far?

Lauren: Speaking for myself here, Lex played a DJ set at Glastonbury and he put the then unreleased Wych into his set. I was dancing away to our track and a person came and asked me what the song was because they liked it! That’s a good feeling!

What’s your songwriting process?

Before the pandemic, we would meet at Lex’s house, come up with a bass and rhythm section and write lyrics together in the garden. During the pandemic, we set each other songwriting challenges, giving each other titles to write songs. After exchanging the Ableton files we would then add to each other’s songs, completing the jigsaw puzzle.

If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?

Lauren: Can I say Bjork? She is an artist in every sense, her live shows are visually and aurally spectacular. To soak in all of that on tour would be incredible and life changing!

If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present, who would the band members be?

Lex: Lauren Partridge and Lex Kosanke!

Lauren: Ha! I was going to do an assortment of musicians but yeah let’s say that!

How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?

You’re likely in for some good, old sweaty fun.

Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?

The gig at Spice of Life will be our first as Holozoa so we will let you know afterwards!

What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?

A cold beer is always appreciated although not very rock and roll!

This question is for all band members. If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?

Lauren: I once found The Cult’s Love on record in the charity shop and was over the moon. She Sells Sanctuary is my ultimate driving tune!

Lex: There are no guilty pleasures, they’re all pleasures!

Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band

Most of the songs you will hear were written as an online file exchange during the pandemic.

If people want to check you out online, where is the best place to go?

Finally, What does the future hold for the band?

July is an exciting month for us. We are releasing our second EP ‘Exhale’ on 8th July, we have our first gig at The Spice of Life on 15th July and are playing our first festival Nozstock on 24th July. We can’t wait to play our songs live and hopefully watch people dancing to them!
