Lilypads

We sat down with Lilypads to find out what makes them tick…

In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favorite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what shaped them into the artist they are today

Today we’re featuring Lilypads

Lilypads is an indie duo formed by brothers Oly & Tom Norman. Guaranteed a fun night, their tunes get you bopping, jigging and tearing-up, potentially all at the same time.

Who are Lilypads? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together etc

Hello there, we are a duo made up of brothers Oliver and Thomas. We first met when Thomas was approximately two and a half and Oliver was emerging from the womb. Although saying that Oliver was probably a couple hours old when they met, I doubt Thomas was there for the actual childbirth. We’ll have to ask Mum.

*ring ring*

Mum?

Hello darlings!

Was Thomas there when you gave birth to Oliver?

Umm… No, no he wasn’t, why?

Ok, bye.

*hangs up*

No.

Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?

Along with our other siblings, we all have tattoos of frogs 🐸 . Thomas’ is on the back of his leg and Olivers is in a place only those closest to him will be lucky to get a glimpse of. But we were doubtful that the name “Frog” (though it made us laugh) would be the best name for the band, so we settled with Lilypads due to the close connotations they have with the frogs.

If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?

Burly Sexy Hunky Lumberjack Firemen

Who are your biggest influences musically?

We grew up listening to mostly 60s-80s rock/pop, any modern influences are more along the lines of indie rock.

What’s the band’s biggest claim to fame so far?

Thomas used to do extras work and once stood a couple of meters away from Johnny Depp.

What’s your songwriting process?

We often just start playing something and see what comes out, then take and expand and work with any bits we really like. It can take me quite a while to finish a song to the point where we’re really happy with it, and generally we don’t set down a lyric unless we’re confident in it.

If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?

Oliver says probably Taylor Swift because she’s famous and he’d imagine it would be rather good exposure. Plus he likes to Shake It Off.

Thomas will go with whoever pays the most. Even if it’s Taylor Swift.

If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?

Oliver says he’d personally have a band full of James Blunts only playing songs he’d written about him.

How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?

Acoustic indie fun

Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?

No but we probably should tbh. We used to sacrifice lambs, but then Oliver went vegan.

What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?

Rider?!! I hardly even know ‘er.

This question is for all band members. If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?

Every single song in Oliver’s library.

Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band

Everyone is bowled away when they find out we’re related, they’re all like “no way, I would never have guessed you were brothers!” I guess you’ll have to judge for yourself and come to a gig or check out our Instagram below 😉

If people want to check you out online, where is the best place to go?

Finally, what does the future hold for the band?

Oh all sorts of exciting things. But you’ll never know unless you come along for the ride. Or, if we get really famous, then you’ll know either way.
