Last of the Lizardmen

We sat down with The Last of The Lizardmen to find out what makes them tick…

In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favourite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what shaped them into the artist they are today

Today we’re featuring The Last of The Lizardmen

Over the past few years ‘Last of the Lizardmen’, has built up a following in Southend, Canterbury and London. Specialising in poisonous riffs with a reptilian zest for political and social commentary, they bring an unmatched energy to every stage which results in nonsense singalongs, mosh pits and a not-so-impromptu visit by the incredible guitar-shredding LIZARDMAN.

Commit To Me (Over and Over)

The Last of The Lizardmen

Who are Last of The Lizardmen? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together, etc.

Last of the Lizardmen are Lawrence, Matt, Flax and Jack, a punky rock band currently based in Essex/London. We met at the University of Kent in Canterbury and went through a couple of iterations before settling on the band you know today, which formed in September of 2018.

Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?

Coming up with a band name is remarkably difficult! It was a very long process with some awful names thrown about. The name is probably most credited to Matt. At this point I think we all have our own ideas for what the band name means, its probably best to let people think about what they want it to mean.

If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?

Best band in the world?

Who are your biggest influences musically?

I think it’s hard to nail down our influences as they’re incredibly broad. We all have very different individual musical backgrounds and influences. We overlap on artists such as Led Zeppelin; Arctic Monkeys; Rage Against the Machine and Frank Carter and the Rattlesnakes.

What’s the band’s biggest claim to fame so far?

We had some massive success at university, winning the campus festival ‘Keynestock’ and going on to play the Summer Ball with mega artists such as Jaxx Jones and Example! Within a week of that we also won the county-wide battle of the bands, which was what led to our first EP being recorded.

What’s your songwriting process?

We jam a lot! Many of the ideas start with our bassist, Flax, who writes a range of excellent riffs and tracks for us to build upon. Jack tends to be the catalyst to transform something good into something that really hypes us up!

If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?

That’s really tough. I think we’d all have different answers for that. Personally I’d love to tour with Muse, they really know how to put on a show and I think we could get some great tips! Flax would probably choose to tour with TOOL, they’re a major influence for him.

If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?

You’d have to have John Bonham on the drums, there isn’t really any other answer for a rock band… especially when you have Jack as your drummer. I think we’d like to see Tom Morello bringing something far out to the table as you can expect him to! We’d have to have a member of TOOL to represent Flax’s interests so we’d have the bassist – Justin Chancellor. For me, the frontman has got to be Freddie Mercury. Has there ever been a better frontman than that?

How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?

Absolutely unmissable. Next question.

Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?

We tend to go hard on some sort of energy drink. We do this thing where I go round to everyone and confirm that we’re gonna really ‘Bring The Noise’. Just to get us hyped up to put on the best show you’d ever see!

What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?

I guess I’d need Red Bull. I don’t think we have high requirements, Red Bull and beer.

This question is for all band members. If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?

I don’t feel embarrassed or guilty listening to anything! Love a good bit of cheese!

Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band

One of the members of this band once voted Tory.

If people want to check you out online, where is the best place to go?

Spotify, Apple Music – we’re on all of them! Matt gives us a great presence on Instagram too!

Finally, What does the future hold for the band?

Not making any promises but hopefully we’ll have an album ready towards the beginning of next year!
