The Ology's

We sat down with The Ology’s  to find out what makes them tick…

In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favourite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what shaped them into the artist they are today

Today we’re featuring The Ology’s

Formed in 2020, The Ology’s are a 5 piece Indie Pop/Rock band from Bedfordshire. Influenced by artists such as Fleetwood Mac, Kings of Leon and The Libertines, The Ology’s music aims to ignite nostalgia and good vibes in its listeners. In July 2020 they released their debut EP titled ‘Introducing…’ which showcased their song-writing talents. Since that release, The Ology’s have enjoyed numerous gigs in and around the London area. In December 2021 they released their single ‘Faith’. 2022 will see The Ology’s play at The XOYO, Spice of Life and Fiddler’s Elbow in London and The Stables in Wavendon amongst other venues around the Midlands.

The Ology's

Who are The Ology’s ? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together etc

We’re a 5-piece indie pop rock band formed in 2020 comprised of members from Leighton Buzzard, Milton Keynes, London and Bournemouth. Nora is our front woman and lead vocalist alongside Seb on rhythm guitar. Josh is our lead Guitarist and we have Dan B on bass and Dan H on the drums. Josh, Dan H and Seb met in school and have formed various bands together over the years. Nora used to watch their bands perform in showcases and began plotting her way into the group – a plan that was achieved many years later! Seb and Dan B toured Italy together or something I think? They never mention it really… (sarcasm), but Dan B’s addition was a very welcome one and now we’re best friends and all share a single mattress in a dilapidated shed. Life is great.

Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?

One of us got a pass in sociology and when they called their Nan she said “You got an Ology!“ Thanks British Telecoms! (That’s for the oldies). Truth is the real story is so boring you wouldn’t want to hear it. Let’s just say we’re very, very clever and all have degrees in an Ology of some type. Honest.

If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?

Chaotic, fun, talented, gorgeous and delusional

Who are your biggest influences musically?

Fleetwood Mac, Paramore and Kings of Leon. Anything with a bit of nostalgia.

What’s the band’s biggest claim to fame so far?

This article… we hope!

What’s your songwriting process?

We all write music and have different methods and styles of how we approach it. Generally, we pick a personal topic or experience and write around that, whether it’s our adolescent traumas or roundabouts in Milton Keynes. We often collaborate on songs to try and bring a piece of each of our influences into everything we play and record.

If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?

Kajagoogoo and The Barron Knights, together we’d be the highest pedigree of Leighton Buzzard. In all seriousness, The Hoosiers are an iconic British band and have been coming out with some incredible new music lately!

If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?

Stevie Nicks, George Benson, John Frusciante, Damien Rice and Slash. Now who wouldn’t want to see that?

How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?

Very good vibes, progressively gets more energetic until everyone’s jumping around. Since Dan B joined, our stage presence has gone up exponentially, we owe it all to him really. (This definitely wasn’t written by Dan B)

Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?

Nora is barred from having Chipotle because of that one time she was ill before going on stage, but besides that we all usually do a shot of our preferred alcohol, except for Nora and Dan H. Dan H normally drives to gigs and Nora has a plethora of intolerances so they usually take a shot of tonic water so they don’t feel left out. Rock and roll baby!

What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?

We’ve all got our own thing really: Seb would want a bowl of exclusively blue M&M’s. Dan H would want a bright purple tour bus with Barney the Dinosaur as the driver (we’re all a bit worried about him to be honest. Dinosaurs are notoriously bad drivers). Nora would like a pill that enables her to drink alcohol without wrecking her entire digestive system. But overall, we love what we do and it would be incredible to reach a point where we can do this for a living, with or without the perks of achieving diva status! Not to mention be able to afford rent comfortably in a post pandemic world, but you can’t have it all!

This question is for all band members. If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?

Josh’s would be ‘I’m too sexy’ by Right Said Fred. Dan H says that all music is beautiful but having ‘IJWICHTY’ by The Ology’s feels narcissistic because he wrote it, and we all agree. Nora has a habit of hearing a song on tiktok a few times and then downloading the artist’s entire tracklist, obsessing over it for a few weeks and then forgetting about it entirely. Shame on Nora. The others were too embarrassed to even answer…

Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band

We all have early nights and early mornings, eat and drink well, exercise regularly, floss our teeth twice a day, manage our money well and have stocks and shares in Avocados. Basically we’re all absolutely perfect human beings with 0 flaws at all. Also that Seb has performed in Nashville (another thing he never mentions). We know that’s not one thing, but we just wanted to brag.

If people want to check you out online, where is the best place to go?

We’re on Instagram (@the_ologys) and Facebook as The Ology’s. We do also post the occasional tiktok as well, just so we don’t fall completely behind on the times! Of course, you can also find our music on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer, SoundCloud, etc! We also have an awesome Merch store! It’s all on our Linktree:  https://linktr.ee/theologysband

Finally, What does the future hold for the band?

We’re always looking forward and trying to improve as a band, much like everyone else. We want to work towards securing bigger and better events and opportunities and keep a consistent quality to our work for our present and future fans to enjoy. We hope to release a few more singles in the coming months, with a potential album in the works… so keep your eyes peeled! Big Love Y’all!
