Camille Ruz

We sat down with Camille Ruz to find out what makes them tick…

In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favourite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what shaped them into the artist they are today

Today we’re featuring Camille Ruz.

Camille Ruz is a 22 year old singer-songwriter originally from Denver Colorado. Camille recently released her debut EP titled ‘Requiem’. A notable feature of her EP was that it was mostly recorded on tape. Inspired by the sounds of the 1960’s and 1970’s, Camille’s biggest influences are Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and Jeff Buckley. Camille’s music is very intimate and deals with topics such as grief, hope and healing through metaphors of nature.

Camille Ruz

Who is Camille Ruz? Where are you from, how long have you been playing music etc

My name is Camille Ruz and I’m from Denver Colorado. I’ve moved around quite a lot and now I’m based in London! I’ve been playing music since I was little. I grew up going to a performing arts school so I was classically trained from the age of eleven but music has always been a leading role in my life.

If you had to describe your sound using just five words, what would they be?

Ethereal, Honest, Delicate, Pretty, Emotional

Who are your biggest influences musically?

Off the big names my top two are Joni Mitchell and Jeff Buckley but there are tons of underground folk artists I love like Vashti Bunyan, Linda Perhacs and Bridget St. John

When you were younger, what was the first album that blew you away and you remember putting on repeat non-stop?

My favourite album ever as a kid was Lady Gaga’s album The Fame but when I was a teenager I was obsessed with MARINA’s The Family Jewels and Lana Del Rey’s Born To Die!

As a performer, what’s your biggest claim to fame so far?

I won this contest when I was 15 where I got to open for The Fray and Michael Franti and Spearhead at a venue I grew up going to so it was a really big moment for me to play there as well as support artists I listened to all the time!

If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?

Its hard to pick but it would probably be Madison Cunningham because I really admire her as an artist and respect her so much. I would love to pick her brain and learn about how she songwrites. Also, I would get to listen to her music all the time live which would be the best thing ever!

If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?

Impossible question! But I would say- I can’t decide between George Harrison or Nick Drake on Guitar, Carol Hayes on Bass, The Wrecking Crew on strings piano and percussion, and Crosby Stills and Nash on backing vocals!

How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?

It’s very intimate and peaceful. More of a storytelling experience than one you dance to. It’s for getting lost in your imagination.

Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?

Just drink lots of water! and make sure my guitar is tuned!

What would your ultimate rider be if you could have anything without being accused of being a diva?

Probably an on tour guru who was also a chef and a yoga instructor or something haha!

If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?

My guilty pleasure artist is Selena Gomez! I grew up idolising her and I will always love her and her music!

Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about you

I used to be sort of emo when I was a young teenager. I had really short hair and always wore tee shirts from this store called Hot Topic and I would wear this neon pink tutu and purple Doc Martens. I loved My Chemical Romance and Green Day and anime! It was a fun stage of my life just super different to how I am now!

If people want to check you out online where is the best place to go?

The only social media I use is Instagram and i’m on all streaming services:) My instagram is @camille_ruz

Finally, What does the future hold for you as an artist?

I just started working on a new EP so there is new music to come and hopefully some more gigs even sooner:)
