MOSAICS

We sat down with Mosaics to find out what makes them tick…

In this feature, we’ll speak to some of HOT VOX’s favourite new artists on the gigging scene and find out what shaped them into the artist they are today

Today we’re featuring Mosaics!

If you’re one for arm-in-arm anthemic choruses, punchy rock drums and 90’s inspired grungy guitar tones; introducing Mosaics.

Noting sonic influences such as Sam Fender, Stereophonics and DMA’s, Mosaics fuse the best of 90’s Britpop with the contemporary shimmer of modern indie to create their infectious “nostalgic indie-rock” sound.

Their debut single ‘Weekend in Paris’ made the rounds on major TV shows (Killing Eve S4, The Outlaws, Marriage & Obsession), and the subsequent music video debuted on Channel 4’s ‘Sunday Brunch’.

Now, after honing their craft on the live circuit and showcasing their catchy hooks on radio, Mosaics proudly present their new single; ‘Jackie Brown’.

Who are MOSAICS? Where you’re from, how you met, how long have you been playing together etc

We’re from all over the country. Owen our vocalist is from Birmingham, lead guitarist Stu is from Norfolk, we’ve got James our drummer representing Skegness (Skegvegas as he claims) and George our Sheffield lad on bass. We’ve been playing together for about five years now having all met at the University of Lincoln. Stu poached James from a different band and had chance meetings with Owen and George in freshers week to form MOSAICS.

Who came up with the band name and does it have a story or any meaning behind it?

Stu came up with the band name after spending the previous summer as a lifeguard, looking at the Mosaic tiling on the floor of the pool. Owen spent the first six months trying desperately to come up with something better, but in the end it really just suited the band the lads were trying to build.

If you had to describe the band using just five words, what would they be?

90’s guitar revival, winging it.

Who are your biggest influences musically?

Recently it’s been a lot of Sam Fender, The Killers and Inhaler. We’ve started moving towards a cleaner, bigger sound and have been living the arena rock era’s of those musicians.

What’s the band’s biggest claim to fame so far?

We made it through to Hot Vox’s Isle of Wight Grand Final just the other week which was just such a sick experience from start to finish. We were so proud to have made it that far and the crowd for the final was just unbelievably generous. Behind the scenes, we’ve had a couple of our songs make it to major worldwide TV shows and our first music video was played on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch alongside Coldplay & Ed Sheeran, which our Nan’s absolutely loved.

What’s your songwriting process?

Usually Owen and Stu will sit down with a couple of guitars and just start from there. Primarily the chords and structure will emerge from Stu, then Owen and Stu write the lyrics & melody over a bottle of really cheap wine. When the song is kinda drafted, they take it to the rehearsal room with George & James where it starts to take a bit of shape, before inevitably going through its sonic evolution in the studio with our incredible producer Matt Cotterill. Honorable shoutout to Tom Allom & Nigel Heath who are similarly crucial in making our songs into records.

If you could go on tour with any current band or artist, who would it be and why?

An unbelievably hard question that one, but it would have to be Sam Fender. We love everything he’s doing in his career and his blend of Springsteen-esque heartland rock & contemporary Indie Rock is a massive influence on us and our sound.

Also (being greedy here)… we’d probably have to say Catfish and the Bottlemen are up there too. Catfish were such a huge influence on us for the first couple of years as a band and to support them would be the ultimate full circle achievement for us.

If you could put your dream team band together consisting of any musicians from the past or present who would the band members be?

Miley Cyrus (in her rock era) on vocals, Johnny Marr taking lead guitar, Dave Grohl on rhythm and general vibes, the late great Taylor Hawkins on drums, Christine McVie on keys and backing vocals with the irreplaceable Paul McCartney providing the low end on the bass.

Find us anyone that wouldn’t see that band.

How would you describe your live show to someone who has never seen you perform before?

Loud, cathartic and kinetic. High energy guitar music but with keen melody and sing along, anthemic choruses. Absolutely not to be missed.

Do any of you have any pre-gig or post gig rituals? If so, what and why?

Wherever we’re driving to, and whoever’s driving, we will blast some early Busted tracks. Air Hostess usually gets the energy up. Upon arrival, we always have a short rehearsal the morning of a gig at whatever local studio is around. Helps blow off the cobwebs before soundcheck and it allows us to play around with our set list on the day. Post-show we generally just hit the bar with a vengeance, as any band should!

This question is for all band members. If we were to browse your music library what is the most embarrassing song we might find? Or who is your guilty pleasure artist?

There should be no guilty pleasures in music! But we’ve definitely got some embarrassing numbers in there. James is on a Sugar Ray hype at the moment, Stu’s guilty pleasure has always been The 1975, Owen’s been obsessed with Caroline Polachek’s “So Hot Your Hurting My Feelings” for about a year now and George had to go classic early 00’s with certified hit makers McFly. That said, we are all unapologetically huge Busted fans.

Tell us one thing your fans would be really shocked or surprised to hear or learn about the band

Owen and George had never played live before joining Mosaics. When George joined the band he didn’t even own a bass, and Owen didn’t start on rhythm guitar until six months in after our original rhythm player quit.

If people want to check you out online, where is the best place to go?

We can be found on Instagram, Facebook & TikTok at @mosaicsband. Give us a follow on Twitter if you’re feeling super generous at @mosaicsbanduk

Finally, What does the future hold for the band?

Who can really say? We’ve got two incredible singles in the pipeline and we’re playing as many high octane shows as we can up and down the nation! We’re so excited to announce our a brand new single ‘Jackie Brown’ coming on Friday 28th July which we’re hugely proud of. To celebrate, we have a single release show on the day at The Spice of Life in Soho. Tickets can be purchased from the link in our bio!
