Weller

Some tracks are so good that you can’t help but hit repeat again and again. We’re lucky enough to experience that feeling quite often with our talented roster, so we thought it would only be fair to share… Today’s TRACK OF THE DAY is Shards by WELLER.

Born and raised in Horley, Surrey (which counts The Cure’s Robert Smith and Lol Tolhurst
among it’s previous residents). 22 year old Charlie Weller is the youngest of five siblings and
inherited his love of music from a guitar-teaching, pub-and-club gigging dad and the record
collections of his older brothers.

After their previous single Cleaning This Whole Town achieved great successes, it was clear
that Weller were going places and this new single Shards has surpassed all expectations once
again. Shards is their sixth single that they’ve released and is also their sixth single to reach the
top 5 of the iTunes rock chart! The song is mainly about the lead singer Charlie Weller and his
struggles with mental health. Something that everyone in this band has had to deal with at some
point and many of their fans and people across the world can relate to.

Shards was written during the first lockdown and is the most emotional song that Weller have
written to date. It starts off soft but the chorus and bridge sections make a serious punch. There
is a heavy use of samples throughout to give it that darker feel.

The song begins with a slow acoustic guitar and vocal melody. It has the making of any other
indie classic but then steps it up a gear to a rockier emo/ pop-punk style of genre. This song
wouldn’t be out of place at a 00s disco and would have been the staple of every teenager’s
iPod. It still however remains current with small nuances that make the track very relevant to
now.

Make sure to catch WELLER at The Spice of Life on 30th July.
