As an integral part of any song, lyrics act a way for artists to divulge their thoughts with listeners, but with so many songs out there, how can you be sure to hear all of these messages?
To grasp these hidden meanings, we have asked StoneCrown to showcase some of their favourite, original lyrics and are pleased to feature them as part of our Waxing Lyrical series.
Today’s Waxing Lyrical With Calon dives into the lyrics of their song ‘Reign of Cameos’.
Adam Lewis aka “Calon” is a Swansea-born singer songwriter based in South-East London.
Calon’s hairpin guitar melodies & candid lyrics transport audiences to personal snapshots; from ex-lovers and accidental philosophies, to existential late-night London bus journeys, Calon invites you to the birthplace of each song.
With a sound echoing the likes of Jeff Buckley, Elliot Smith & Radiohead, Calon’s Jazz chords and Bossa Nova rhythms give a folky and familiar feel.
This year Calon is recording his concept EP entitled “Matryoshka” and playing various gigs in London including The Troubadour.
The inspiration for the song was the dissolution of a relationship; there are certain lines about questioning if the other person completes you, or if you’re a “whole person” in spite of them (and if you need them to complete you). The line “Reign of Cameos” refers to the transitory nature of meeting people (in this case, a romantic relationship) and how we move on from it; there’s a cathartic element to the song and a reminder that some people just aren’t right for one another.
Lyrics:
How have you been?
Oh, the same
I’m not your king, or any other name
I’ve been to-and-fro
I bet that’s something you didn’t want to know
You and I had the drive
But not the soul
Are we half or whole?
Is there time to know?
You were right in the middle of the flame
In the reign of cameos
Now we both seek but hide from the game
You’re not my queen, and you’re not to blame
I need no repeat for this habit of mine
To see things as defeat
Are we half or whole?
Is there time to know?
You were right in the middle of the flame
In the reign of cameos
How have you been?
Oh, the same
