GLASSMINDS

As an integral part of any song, lyrics act a way for artists to divulge their thoughts with listeners, but with so many songs out there, how can you be sure to hear all of these messages?

To grasp these hidden meanings, we have asked GLASSMINDS to showcase some of their favourite, original lyrics and are pleased to feature them as part of our Waxing Lyrical series.

Today’s Waxing Lyrical With GLASSMINDS dives into the lyrics of their song ‘Swimming In Yourself’.

Verse 1
Do you get tired of swimming in yourself
With a list of all the things you keep on the shelf
So take a seat and listen to your lie
It’s on repeat all through the night
Chorus
And I can’t see how you keep
Staying there swimming in yourself
Swimming in yourself
Verse 2
Do you get tired of swimming in yourself
And hoarding your possessions trying to keep your wealth
Do you not see that dirty look in your eyes
Its drowning me further from the light
Chorus
And I can’t see how you keep
Staying there swimming in yourself
Swimming in yourself
Swimming in yourself
And I can’t see how you keep,
Staying there swimming in yourself
Swimming in yourself
Swimming in yourself

GLASSMINDS decided to share with us the meaning behind this incredible song:

‘Swimming In Yourself’ is open to interpretation. We wanted to write a song that highlighted an individual’s ability to be absorbed in their own self. Whether that manifests itself through narcissism and self-obsession, or through more challenging feelings such as self-doubt, these different mindsets blind us to the damage that the lies we tell ourselves can cause us, and to others. Although acutely personal and reflecting a state of mind at the time, the lyrics express this message from the perception of someone else reaching out, trying to understand why you’re simply unable to escape a toxic mindset. Most clearly articulated in the chorus: “And I can’t see how you keep staying there, swimming in yourself”.
Water was absolutely central to the journey and the process of writing ‘Swimming In Yourself’. It represents the feeling of being engulfed – that we swim through our psyche in a seemingly endless pursuit of what we believe will make us happy.
When in reality we end up “drowning” ourselves “further from the light”. When we go through these motions, the reality is that, within ourselves we leave the real reasons for our pain or our ego “on the shelf”, and focus more on what we think is
in front of us, rather than what should be.
