As an integral part of any song, lyrics act as a way for artists to divulge their thoughts with listeners, but with so many songs out there, how can you be sure to hear all of these messages?
To grasp these hidden meanings, we have asked Indigo Apartment to showcase some of their favourite, original lyrics and are pleased to feature them as part of our Waxing Lyrical series.
Today’s Waxing Lyrical With Indigo Apartment dives into the lyrics of their song ‘Shake the Handle’.
Indigo Apartment are an alternative band from Watford, UK. With them they bring powerful songwriting and a refreshing, emotionally-charged catalogue that draws inspiration from a diverse range of genres, including rock and indie, while embracing a distinctive and unique sonic identity.

In August 2023, Indigo Apartment released and began promoting their debut EP, ‘Slip Away’, performing at highly esteemed venues including West Hampstead Arts Club and Camden Assembly.
Verse 1:
When you get on up
And you can’t shake the handle
Of the door, inside your head
Pre chorus
Do you remember
The night that we had last
December I don’t think I ever
Had my shit together
Chorus
Do you believe
That we could make it work
Do you believe
I’m not myself anymore
Do you believe believe
That I could be perfectly sombre
Verse 2:
When the sheets feel rough
And you can’t fight the hunger
I’m undercover, not under covers.
Next to you Pre-Chorus
Times I see better , I wish that they could last forever
I don’t think I ever
Had my shit together
(Instrumental)
Chorus:
Do you believe
That we could make it work
Do you believe I’m not myself anymore
Do you believe Believe
That I could be Perfectly Sombre
“Shake the Handle is essentially the feeling of not wanting to get out of bed in the morning, it’s also about accepting that life can take many unexpected turns and sometimes the morning can be the slowest start to the day. But the idea is if you shake the handle (of the door) you’re putting yourself in the right direction for the day ahead.
We wrote the song over the Christmas period but reflects sentiments of living on your own and even the lockdown period in 2020. We worked on it collectively as a four and recorded at Newcastle University Music Studios in April. Which I study at and therefore engineered the record. “
