My Fine Companions

Today’s Waxing Lyrical With My Fine Companions dives into the lyrics of their song ‘The House We Built Yesterday’.

As an integral part of any song, lyrics act a way for artists to divulge their thoughts with listeners, but with so many songs out there, how can you be sure to hear all of these messages?

To grasp these hidden meanings, we have asked My Fine Companions to showcase some of their favourite, original lyrics and are pleased to feature them as part of our Waxing Lyrical series.

Today’s Waxing Lyrical With dives into the lyrics of their song ‘The House We Built Yesterday’.

According to a recent reviewer, My Fine Companions “create the feeling you have known them forever, inviting you to share a friendly drink”. Another called their music “a fantastic communal experience”. The band themselves describe what they do as “country folk music, played for fun, usually accompanied by beer”.

Formed in London in 2017, they’ve been playing all over the city ever since. They’ve also made four albums in that time. The latest of which, ‘Gone To Be Free’, was released last year.

The House We Built Yesterday

My Fine Companions

You lit a fire when I let you in
And when I was losing
You helped me to win.
So, tell me what’s wrong
And why you can’t stay
In this house that we built yesterday.

She was the one
Then she was gone.
His heart that she stole, all the memories of old
A love that he felt so strong.

He said ‘can’t you see,
I’m broken and there’s no warranty.
Oh why can’t you stay? Why’d you leave me this way?
Why’d you do this to me?

Cos you lit a fire when I let you in
And when I was losing you helped me to win.
So, tell me what’s wrong
And why you can’t stay
In this house that we built yesterday.’

She turned away,
There’s was nothing, no words she could say
But she’d always be glad for the love that they had
Till today when she heard him say.

You lit a fire when I let you in
And when I was losing you helped me to win.
So, tell me what’s wrong
And why you can’t stay
In this house that we built yesterday.

You lit a fire when I let you in
And when I was losing you helped me to win.
So, tell me what’s wrong
And why you can’t stay
In this house that we built yesterday,
In this house that we built yesterday.
